Policies Should Change
After the other day, when we were heart broken over Effie, I decided to write a letter to the Conway Daily Sun about the Conway Area Humane Society as well as other local shelters.
Not only did we have to have Effie put to sleep, we are now faced with having Chakra put down as well.
In my opinion, they can only claim to be a non-kill shelter is only true, because it is us owners who are doing the deed.
Here is a copy of the letter:
To The Editor:
I will never buy another dog (or any other animal for that matter) from The Conway Humane Society or any other shelter ever again.
Problem number one: The shelter “knows nothing†about the animals you adopt. If they truly don’t know, they don’t make any effort to know. If they do know, they will never disclose it because then the animal will not be adopted. There should be a full disclosure of all medical and emotional needs of the dog before adoption so that the new family can make an informed decision.
We have bought two dogs that had health issues that could have easily been detected with a stethoscope and a good set of ears. Our vet heard it immediately.Â
Problem number two: The policies at the C.H.S. If you “buy†a dog, and then find out the animal has issues you are not or don’t want to handle, you are out of luck. You can return it, but you do not get your money back. You can’t exchange the animal either. You must pay all over again.
We inquired about returning the dog, and they said it would be treated as a surrender, instead of a return. This would have gone against us in adopting another dog or animal. These policies are not right for anyone including the pet.
These policies only benefit the shelters financial bottom line.
The policies should be changed to better serve the animal as well as the community.
