Exposing the Heckman Floor
Finally, we have the orginal floor exposed in the kitchen. It took a lot of work, and my arms are tired, but it was worth it. We figure it is about 70 years old. To most, it is would be ugly, but to us it is what we needed to continue our journey on back dating the kitchen to the late 1930’s- early 1940’s. At some point, we would like to open the ceiling up and expose the beams and the window that is up in the “attic” of the kitchen, but that would take much more muscle than we have right now.
You see, our kitchen was originally not the kitchen it is today. By what we figure it was just a shed, or something like that. Possibly a summer kitchen. It doesn’t have a foundation, and the construction would indicate that it was not meant for year round living. The attic and walls have been insulated, but the floors are not. They are a tad cold in the winter. One of these days, we will get that done too.
